The cycle has its own tempo
For most people the menstrual cycle runs between 21 and 35 days, and how you feel can shift several times along the way. After the period, energy and the urge to move usually come back. Around ovulation many people feel at their best in the whole month. In the last week before bleeding, tiredness turns up more often, along with irritability and the wish to go to bed earlier.
Discomfort in the first days of bleeding is familiar to most people who menstruate. The scale varies: from a mild sense of heaviness to a state where sitting through a meeting is hard work. These are days for a gentler plan.
Warmth is the simplest tool
Warmth is the oldest household habit for these days and still one of the most comfortable. A hot water bottle low on the belly, a warm bath, loose clothes instead of a belt digging into the waist. Warmth relaxes the muscles and simply makes sitting or lying down easier. If you like tea, keep it warm and caffeine-free after midday, so it does not take the evening’s sleep.
Movement that does not tire you
Effort does not have to be big on these days. Twenty minutes of a calm walk, a few minutes of stretching hips and back, gentle yoga, or swimming if a pool happens to be nearby. A personal-best session in the gym can wait until next week; the body usually says how much it feels like today.
Write down what you notice
A cycle calendar in your phone, or an ordinary notebook, does a job memory will not do. The date of day one, how strong the discomfort is on a scale of one to five, sleep, appetite, mood. After three or four months a pattern shows up: when to plan a quieter day, and when the body has the most energy.
Those notes are useful in the consulting room too. If the discomfort is severe, wakes you at night, gets in the way of work, or has suddenly changed character, make an appointment and take the notes with you. Specific dates and numbers say more than a sentence about things being worse lately.
An evening for winding down
An evening routine helps whatever day of the cycle it is. A dark bedroom, a cooler room, less screen in the last hour, a steady bedtime.
The body does not run the same way every month, and it does not have to. Adjusting the plan of the day to that is the easier direction.
