Neck and back after a workday — an evening routine

In the evening it usually shows up in two places: the base of the neck and between the shoulder blades. After eight hours in front of a screen that is no mystery. An adult head weighs around five kilograms, and all day it hangs a few centimetres in front of the body’s axis, because that is a more comfortable way to look at a monitor.

The screen first, everything else after

The top edge of the monitor belongs roughly at eye level, with the screen about an arm’s length away. A laptop flat on the desk breaks that rule every time — any stand, or a ream of paper, plus a separate keyboard, fixes it. Five minutes of work that then works every day.

Breaks instead of heroics

Every forty minutes, stand up and look out of the window at something far away for half a minute. The eyes rest and the neck changes position along the way. Dull, but it gives more than one long massage on Saturday.

Three movements in the evening

A slow tilt of the head towards one shoulder and then the other, twenty seconds each. Ten shoulder rolls backwards. Hands clasped behind the back, opening the chest gently for a few breaths. Nothing forced. Then two minutes of a warm shower on the neck; warmth loosens muscles faster than lying still does.

The last hour of the day

Putting the screen away forty minutes before bed changes the evening more than it sounds like it should.

The everyday background

The Earth’s magnetic field is the environment in which life developed, and our daily exposure to it looks different now than it did a century ago, because we spend the day in buildings and vehicles. MIM-2 adds a pulsed field of its own: two ranges, roughly 4 Hz and roughly 12 Hz, a pulse of about 0.2 ms, induction below 5 μT. The same signal has been leaving the device for more than thirty years. It is a wellness device.

Tension that keeps building despite changes at the desk, or lasts for several weeks, is a matter for a doctor rather than an evening routine.
