Two papers with the same phrase in the title, “electromagnetic field”, can describe phenomena that differ by orders of magnitude. In one the field repeats a hundred times a second and is measured in millitesla; in the other, a few times a second and in microtesla. It is a bit like using one word for a candle flame and a blast furnace.
An honest overview of magnetic field research therefore starts with the parameters and only then moves to conclusions — how strong the evidence is, and what must not be read into it.
One label, many different fields
PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) is a collective name. It covers devices described by at least four numbers: pulse repetition rate, induction, the duration of a single pulse and the length of exposure. Change any one of them and it becomes a different study.
Hence the trouble with headlines. The sentence “research on magnetic fields has shown X”, without those four numbers, means roughly as much as “research on medicines has shown X”.
What placebo-controlled reviews show
The information below refers to PEMF technology in general terms, not to the specific MIM-2 device. MIM-2 is not a certified medical device. The studies cited are educational and contextual only.
PEMF technology is the subject of meta-analyses of placebo-controlled human studies in osteoarthritis; these reviews point to an improvement in pain perception alongside heterogeneous quality of evidence (Yang 2020; Wu 2018; Cochrane 2013).
“Heterogeneous quality of evidence” sounds like hedging and is a description of the state of play: some papers enrol a few dozen people, protocols differ between centres, and results are not always repeatable. A review that admits this is worth more than one that does not.
Laboratory, animal, human
PEMF technology is the subject of laboratory studies and animal-model studies on bone tissue regeneration, wound healing and the modulation of inflammatory mediators (reviews: Varani 2017; Di Bartolomeo 2022).
The order in that heading is not accidental. A cell in a dish responds to a stimulus that cannot be reproduced the same way in a person: different distance from the source, different skin, different pace. The road from cell culture to recommendations for people takes more than a decade, and more often stops halfway.
What does not follow from it
None of this work concerns MIM-2 and cannot be transferred to it. The device works with a pulsed field at an average pulse repetition rate of about 4 Hz and about 12 Hz, with a pulse duration of the order of 0.2 ms and induction below 5 μT — values orders of magnitude lower than in most of the studies cited, and the bands themselves come from more than thirty years of user observation, not from a research protocol.
MIM-2 remains a wellness device and should be read as one: it supplements a daily routine and does not replace a visit to the doctor. The Earth’s magnetic field has been part of the surroundings life grew up in; that is the frame of this conversation, and the rest is still under study.
