Rhythms of recovery: why the body rests in cycles

Around two in the afternoon the office goes quiet. Someone fetches a third coffee, someone else reads the same paragraph for the third time, and nothing moves. An hour later the work picks up on its own.

That afternoon dip has little to do with lunch. The body runs in cycles: wakefulness and recovery trade places on a timetable that repeats every day, and at night roughly every ninety minutes. Chronobiology has mapped that timetable for decades, and the practical conclusions are refreshingly ordinary.

The day returns to the same place

Core body temperature drops in the evening by a few tenths of a degree and reaches its low point before dawn. Melatonin rises in the evening. Cortisol in the morning. These curves do not follow the hour you happened to go to bed; they run their own course after a sleepless night too, which is why eight in the morning often feels lighter than four.

Sleep comes in stretches

A night breaks into cycles of roughly 90 minutes, four to six of them. Deep sleep dominates the first half; later there is less of it and more of the stages that carry dreams. Hence the impression that an alarm ringing mid-stretch hurts more than the same alarm fifteen minutes later. Hence, too, the reputation of the short nap: twenty minutes end before deep sleep begins, so you get up without a heavy head.

Light counts for most

Morning light outdoors runs to about 10,000 lux under cloud and well past 50,000 in the sun. A well-lit office gives 300–500. To the eye that is a difference of quantity. To the circadian rhythm it is a difference of kind. Half an hour outside before noon does more for evening sleepiness than any gadget, while a bright screen at eleven at night pulls the other way.

What is being studied in magnetic fields

Pulsed magnetic field technology is the subject of controlled research into sleep quality. In a study involving 153 people with sleep disorders, a device generating 1 Hz pulses improved questionnaire scores against placebo (Liao et al., 2023). That result cannot be carried over to MIM-2: a different device, different parameters, a different protocol.

The Earth’s magnetic field is the environment in which life evolved. A day spent in reinforced concrete, in a car and indoors changes how much of it reaches us. MIM-2 supplements the exposure: a pulsed field with an average pulse repetition rate of about 4 Hz or 12 Hz, a single pulse lasting around 0.2 ms, induction below 5 μT. Thirty years of user observation say this much — for some people a few-minute session becomes a fixed point of the evening, the moment the phone goes down. MIM-2 remains a wellness device and does not replace medical care.

And that two o’clock will be back tomorrow. You can plan for it — ten minutes outdoors, or a short nap — instead of a third coffee.
